Curators' Comments
Time and space meet in memory: Looking back at the beauty of Hudek's architecture
As an architect, Hudek's originality is unique, and the design style is unpredictable. He was a pioneer in integrating European architectural concepts with Shanghai elements. Architecture fulfilled his legend with his poetic design, like frozen pieces of music.
Today, another artist and photographer, Yang Xinsheng, focuses on the innovation of photography and using new technologies and materials to present his image story. The photographer wants to utilise the visual language that he calls unconventional photography to reinvent Hudek's stories in architecture in a poetic and picturesque way.
Walking on the streets of Shanghai, it is hard not to meet 'Hudek'. After learning about the architect's life and looking at his architecture, people are moved by his originality and good intentions. Over the years, these works have recorded history traces and are still enticing to this day. Hudek was good at creating buildings with different styles with no fixed way. His style was constantly evolving with various Western architectural forms. Similarly, Yang Xinsheng also practices the art of photography in an open and evolving way. Yang combines form, light, colour and intangible minds to express his intuition and inner feelings through the images and interprets Hudek's architecture into poetry
This exhibition covers some of Hudek's footprints in Shanghai and some early architectural enlightenment in his hometown. Years ago, the photographer was invited to Hudek's home town for a photo exhibition of Hudek’s architecture. He used that opportunity to observe the beautiful city and neighbourhoods that nurtured Hudek's talent, trying to discover the cultural genes that Hudek inhered. To some extent, the photographer found that the display of the building's exterior, interior space and construction details allows people to communicate with the building more deeply.
Yang tries to use images through the lens and integrates poetry into photography. With his unique "unconventional photography" and Hudek's architectural beauty, he composes an image story to tell the world and brings different sensory experiences to the viewers through the pictures. These pictures somehow show Hudek's life and legend course, expressing deep nostalgia and respect for the architect.
Let us follow Yang's image story by retrospecting Hudek in the frozen notes and feeling the heartbeat of time-space and memory.

László Hudec

László Hudec (1893-1958, Chinese name Wu Dake) was a Hungarian–Slovak architect active in Shanghai from the 1920’s to the 1940’s and responsible for some of that city's most notable structures.

‍‍Hudec was born in 1893 in a wealthyarchitect family in Besztercebánya, Austria-Hungary (now Banská Bystrica in Slovakia) . He studied architecture at Budapest University from 1911 to 1914. As a patriot, Hudec volunteered to join the Austro-Hungarian Army after outbreak of World War I, but was captured by the Russian Army in 1916 and was sent to a prison camp in Siberia. In 1918, while being transferred, he jumped from a train near the Chinese border and made his way to Shanghai, where he joined the American architectural office R. A. Curry.

In 1925, he opened his own practice, and was responsible for around 100 buildings up to the 1940’s.

Hudec's masterpiece is usually considered to be the 22-storyPark Hotel Shanghai, on Nanjing Road across from People's Square. Built in 1934, it was the tallest building in the city until the 1980s, and is still a local landmark.

After leaving Shanghai in 1947, Hudec moved toLugano, Switzerland and later to Rome. In 1950 he moved to Berkeley where he taught at the University of California. He died from a heart-attack during an earthquake in 1958. In 1970 his remains were buried in an evangelical cemetery in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia.

Hudec’s major works include thePark Hotel, the Grand Theatre, the Joint Savings and Loan building, the combined Baptist Publications and Christian Literature Society buildings, and the post-modern "Green House". Hudec's style evolved during his active period, from the eclectic neo-classicism popular in the early 20th century to art deco and modern buildings toward the later part of his career.Although some of his buildings have been lost in the intervening decades, many survive.
